Jack Of All Trades

Would you take a job as "Jack Of All trades"? I see a a lot of positions being offered where a company wants skills like PHP+ASP, Graphic Designer, DBA, and Flash Expert all combined in one. Yes, there may be folks out there that possess all of these skills, but for the salary being offered for this position, but doesn't this throw up red flags to anyone?
I see these requirements and it seems to me the company doesn't know what they want. What happened to the good old days where developers were developers, DBAs' were DBAs', etc… If the company needs all these skills, then perhaps they should create multiple positions to fill these roles instead of trying to squeeze every imaginable technology into one role and expect to find a candidate.
Will you work to death for such a small salary? I guess a job is better than no job, and being stuck doing one thing repeatedly sucks. But, those skills and programs don't come cheap either. Do corporations and their idiots in HR need a refresher course in the differences among various fields of IT? I think so, considering half of them don't even check to see what state I live in.

I definitely understand what you mean. I’ve had a couple of interviews where the company was advertising for one type of job and then expecting way more than what should be required. Like you said, some of these companies need to do more research into the jobs they are hiring for. The last instance I had was where I applied for a graphic design job and they started asking me questions about perl, java, and other programming languages (none of which were listed anywhere in the job description). I was just like is this a graphic design job offer or a programming and scripting job offer? After talking to her for a while, I kindly let her know that what she was looking for was a web designer and a programmer…not a graphic designer. What a waste of my time. Then, also where they try to combine 3 or 4 jobs into one…like you indicated above. It’s real frustrating and avoidable if people would take the time to understand what the job functions are and to what positions those functions can be applied. Graphic design, web design, programming…all of those are different areas that require specific skills…and you can even go further into breaking those down into smaller specifics especially with programming.
