Bad Job Recruiters
At least I'm not the only one who's frustrated with the job hunting scene. There are comments in my previous post about being a jack of all trades. When you offer me a job, check what state I live in, at least. I live in California, and there is NO WAY I could accept a job in New York. Because that is 2800+ miles from where I live. That is a seriously long commute.
Why can't these companies figure out that even though Anaheim and San Diego are in the same state, they're 200 miles apart? The only reason I bother reply back, is because I assume it's telecommute offer. I mean, why else would you try and hire someone so far away?
Unfortunately anyone can decide to be a recruiter. There is no formal education or training necessary to get into this industry. This makes it an easy business for scammers and con artists. Candidates might submit information to a "professional" recruiter that will have Social Security Numbers, birthdates, or other identifiable information on it. That opens the door to ID theft. They'll put you through a juicer if they could get one more ounce of blood from you.
Is outsourcing head hunting to India the problem? Apparently, they don't have access to google maps in India. They must burn through thousands of qualified candidates they can't place in jobs. Bad recruiters regard you as a commodity to be exploited today and discarded tomorrow. Good recruiters understand they've got to build a relationship with you.
I have a feeling that job seekers aren't totally blameless in this equasion. Desperate job candidates will put up with almost anything from headhunters. Bad recruiters will ask you for a resume, reasons for job hunting, and salary requirements. It's then obvious they haven't read your resume, and are just looking to plug the salary info into a database.
It's not only the contract staffing firm or individual recruiter that is the problem. It's also the large companies approving staffing contracts to the lowest bidder. Many companies simply do not want to deal with the flood of unqualified candidate's resumes that come in when they post jobs directly on boards etc. Recruiters serve as a filter. They may also hold the keys to positions that you would otherwise be unaware of. A recruiter that gets to know you, can put in a good word for you when it comes to competing candidates. Just keep in mind that they are getting paid a good fee to find the right employees for companies.
Any job request that sounds serious, I respond too. It's difficult to get a feel for how good a recruiter is, until first contact. If you get scammed, there is no government agency to help you. Oh sure, you can notify the BBB, but all they do is compile statistical data on complaints. Resolving any of your claims are low on the priority list.
It is always a good idea to understand what to look out for, to become educated and informed and to choose your recruiter wisely. Find recruiters who care, have compassion for your well being, and will be concerned about your welfare.
